SEPTEMBER
The tree still stands
by the edge of the lake
a remnant of a beautiful life
once creator of slick green leaves
of supporting roots
home to owls and hawks
woodpeckers and squirrels
still a resting place for transit birds
a witness to the beauty of the lake
the setting sun
the clouds closing in for the night

EVENING CLOUDS
The dark clouds of night
settle on the quiet harbor
bringing with them the soft breeze of summer
relief from the harsh heat of the sun
the cries of terns and gulls
diminish into the twilight
the clouds descend to the dunes
drift to their paths over the horizon
to reveal the specter
of the moon and Venus
high in the sky
