THE CROCUS
Her golden breast open to the sun
the crocus is the first
to the spring starting line
huddled in a warm corner of the garden
fighting through the detritus of winter
the crocus perseveres
through the darkness
patiently waiting for the light
to show her beauty to passing eyes
seeking for signs of spring

JANUARY
Winter is here
the harbor stretches out in its vastness
of blues and whites
at home the trees are long slender fingers
filigreed in white
reaching for the sky
the frog pond is frozen over
the frogs taken refuge in the bottom
hibernating until the spring
when they can once again leap about
with abandon
the deck is empty
silent
bereft of chairs and tables
hibernating as well
until April comes
