BLEEDING HEART
 
The first fluffy tufts of green
peek out of the crack in the garden wall
shooting from the earth
impatient to be grown
and flowering

 
Each day they grow
inches taller
then feet
til finally the string of hearts
flows gracefully
a stream of tiny valentines
for the hummingbird’s delight

SNOW GEESE
The choreography of snowy wings
performing in the sky
as fine an air show as ever seen
passing back and forth
from north to south
following instructions hidden in their brains
then lifting off to do another set
for fun

The wonder of the sandhill cranes
gathering at dawn in multitudes
rising with the sun
as a cloud
melding with the river as the wind
a melodious din

The winter sunset surprises
I need not huddle in the chill so close
my eyes to never see the warmth
painted at eye level
The warmth brings life to death

I raise my head through the chilling wind
to where the sun lies dying

Small boy
pondering the end of day
the clear smell of the darkening lake
the sweet ache of muscles well used

The vision of home
the pull of the toys in the corner
