WINTER SUNSET
The winter sunset surprises
I need not huddle in the chill so close
my eyes to never see the warmth
painted at eye level
The warmth brings life to death
painted at eye
I raise my head through the chilling wind
to where the sun lies dying

than surprising antelope
even-toed ungulates
ankle-deep in snow
oblivious
to the havoc far away
concentrating only on sustenance

The seasons pass
with the leaves of scarlet
edged by white

Small boy
pondering the end of day
the clear smell of the darkening lake
the sweet ache of muscles well used
the fuzz of fatigue creeping in
….and what ahead?
The vision of home
the pull of the toys in the corner
the sensuous waft of heaven cooking
the smooth silky coat of the dog
the final drawer of a snuggle into bed

CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN
The hut lay far beyond
reason’s feeble grasp
the wind became a heathen force
the rain a chill reminder
of fragile human warmth
huddling in the lea
of an inhospitable rock
Only prayer flowed free
through that maelstrom cloud
to tomorrow
